Years ago I went through a very challenging time. For months and months, my predominant thought was I’M SO SAD. And you know what that created on the inside of me? Yep, SADNESS! Is it okay to feel sad? Sure. It is a healthy emotion when we’ve gone through something really difficult or things didn’t turn out the way we expected.
But the more I thought to myself, “This shouldn’t have happened!” “What happened to my life?” “Why is this happening?” the worse I felt.
And while those thoughts may have justified my feelings, I realized that I didn’t have to stay in that place. And neither do YOU!
Now, I’m not belittling your pain. Grief is something that we humans go through in stages. But I don’t believe we have to stay stuck in any of them for long. Maybe you lost someone you loved or they moved away or maybe they just moved out of the nest. One of my wise coaches coined the phrase “All change feels like loss”. Even when it’s something positive, like a promotion or a new job or opportunity, we wonder why we might feel sad when we think we should be happy. But I promise that there’s room for all of it.
Do I ever still have feelings of sadness over what happened to me? Sure. That is completely normal. It doesn’t mean I’m failing or my faith is not strong enough. It means I am a human. Period. But, I will say I am no longer in what we call “the river of misery”. I am now equipped to FEEL the SADNESS whenever it surfaces, instead of stuffing it back down and ignoring myself(because this is part of me and must be tended to). And it no longer throws me into the depths of despair. This is TRUE FREEDOM. Allowing myself to FEEL ANY EMOTION that comes up, without shame or judgment. I can now face anything in this life and I know I will be okay!
