They say your sibling relationship is likely the longest one you will have on earth. Longer than your parents, spouse, or your own children, you will have walked the earth the longest with your siblings.
It’s important to remember that while you’ve known each other the longest and went through a large chunk of your lives very closely, you are not your siblings. Your experience of things that happened in your childhood home is different even from your siblings’ experience. You were of different ages and different developmental stages and different personalities. And thus, you can even have very different memories of the situations you experienced.
Now that you are grown you don’t have to feel the same to be in unity. You now can develop compassion and love for how they may perceive things differently from you and just love and support who they are today.
Relationships are the most vital part of our lives and the number one thing people share regrets about on their death bed. Their thoughts are never, “I wish I worked more or made more money, or traveled more.” But rather, I wish I could see ______________ one more time, or I wish I mended that relationship.
All relationships are messy, especially family because we don’t get to choose our family. When we trust that God knows each of us intimately, we can trust that He knew what He was doing when He chose us for the exact family He placed us in. Some childhoods are harder than others, but the challenges we each face God can then use us uniquely to help and pour encouragement into other lives. We are created to learn from every challenge we’ve ever faced.
