I read an article today that spoke of all the ways you can show your employees that they are valued.
It stated that when people FEEL VALUED they are more likely to do MORE than what is expected of them.
And that their employees’ HAPPINESS comes from feeling VALUED and not just EMPLOYED.
While this thought seems correct in some ways, it also struck a couple nerves for me.
Let me explain.
Of course, we hope that those working for us know how valued they are and we hope to be genuine in conveying that sentiment.
And, one would hope that employers strive to convey that without an ulterior motive of performance.
Because we either truly VALUE PEOPLE or we don’t.
But, I also think that there is a missing component to this line of thinking.
Many companies train their employees how to “DO” their job, but they don’t usually invest in teaching them how to handle the “emotional” side of their job, ie how to handle challenges with managers or coworkers, how to manage their own mindset when stressed, and how to motivate themselves to do a job they are proud of.
While, yes, it is important to value our people, it is more important to teach them how to become emotionally resilient and that THEY must bring VALUE and PURPOSE to their job, no matter what it may be.
Our value comes from within.
Jobs are terrible at giving us our value.
It’s not your job’s job to make you feel valued.
This is why people go from job to job or relationship to relationship because they are expecting a certain feeling from those things.
They somehow keep choosing jobs with “bad managers”.
Or are they?
Happiness is never promised to us, but we can feel completely valued and fulfilled as we each bring purpose to whatever position we fill.
It’s an inside job.
How we choose to think about ourselves and a work situation is much more important than the situation itself.
This is something we have TOTAL CONTROL over.
And enjoying what we do always begins with our thoughts and truly understanding the inherent value we ALREADY possess as a human!
Whenever we are feeling UNDERVALUED it is always because we have forgotten where our true value comes from.
While it is wonderful to be validated by people, we must always find our value in who we are and in WHOSE WE ARE!
When we don’t get chosen at the interview, we must remember that we are chosen by God. (John 15:16)
When we didn’t receive the promotion, (that we have honestly worked hard for), remember that your job is just one avenue of blessing in your life and that God will always meet all of your needs. (Phil. 4:19)
The people in our lives, whether our spouses, children, family, bosses, or coworkers are all there to help us grow into the highest version of ourselves, and once we remind ourselves that we are ALREADY HIGHLY FAVORED by God, we can let all of these people “off the hook”. (2 Cor. 12:9- Grace is His unmerited FAVOR on us! It’s His DIVINE ability to overcome ANY human inability!)
