Babies Don’t Keep

My love affair with babies began when I was just a babe myself.

As number four in birth order out of five children, I adored the opportunity as a toddler to “mother” my younger brother (much to his chagrin as he cried loudly upon hearing that Mommy said I could be his very own little “mother”).

The “big kids” as we referred to them during that season, each went off to school each day and I was the blessed one who was still at home with Mommy and learned so much as she cared for a newborn.

The above lines are taken from the song entitled “Song for a Fifth Child” by Ruth Hulbert Hamilton which is often referred to as “Babies Don’t Keep.”

I remember it hung on the wall in my beloved Auntie’s house where I was also blessed to spend many days watching her as she rocked many, many foster babies and then adopted five of her own.

I guess you could say the delight in little ones is in my genes?

What a wise woman Ruth was.

Ruth was the mother of four children aged 11,9,7 and 5 when her fifth child, Jane, was born. “The children were all older when Jane was born and they would rush home to see her and hold her. Since there were five years between my next youngest and Jane, I had a bit more quiet time with her.” Ruth recalls.

Oh, sweet Mamas, I don’t know exactly what season you find yourself in today.

Perhaps the rocking days have long passed and you are busy with tweens or teens (even our grown babes need to be embraced)

It’s never too late, especially as we slip deeper into autumn with chilly, rainy days ahead edging us closer into the silent days of winter, to revel in your God-given blessings.

Put a roast in the crock, some tea in your cup, and snuggle up and simply adore your babes, young and old.

Delight in how they take their first steps, create a masterpiece, the sound of their laughter, or the way their tongue juts out of one side of their mouth while they concentrate hard on something. 😉

I promise you that you will never ever regret the slow days, the snuggly days, the days full of interesting conversations.

Let the cleaning slip away from time to time and let your babes have memories of a mama who is present, peaceful, and enamored with them. ❤ ~Be Blessed, Jenny xoxo
