A while back I was blessed to be included in an incredible mastermind of women of faith in The Beautiful Mind Academy, led and founded by the amazing Jessica Shakir.
If you ever have the opportunity to be a part of anything Jessica is involved in you will never be the same.
Her insight and application of God’s Word is profound and she, like me, loves to “geek out” on the in-depth study of the original languages in the Bible.
During one session we were unpacking the true Biblical meaning behind the word “helpmate or helpmeet” reference in the Book of Genesis referring to Eve and her God-designed partnership with her husband Adam, and our example to be followed today of a godly wife.
When we think of the term “helper” it can sometimes get lost in the thought that it is a subservient calling, when in truth I hope to prove to you in this post that it is VITAL!
The definition of “helpmeet” is one who strengthens someone in a way that they cannot do for themselves. In fact, the first word to describe Eve was a term that God used to describe HIMSELF!
Jesus, in John 14, described the Holy Spirit, Who was to come onto the earth once Jesus left to ascend to God’s right hand, as The Helper. And God the Father is described many times in the OT as a Helper.
In Genesis 2, the literal term for ” helpmeet” in Hebrew is “EZER KENEGDO” which translates as EZER=WARRIOR, a combination of the roots ‘-z-r, meaning “to rescue, to save, to be strong” and KENEGDO=COUNTERPART, ALONGSIDE, and more literally, IN FRONT OF.
In this sense, God has given to women HIS very identity and this characteristic!
To give you some context as to how this applies to my own life in a very profound way, years ago, during our 25th year of marriage, my husband experienced what could be described as a “midlife crisis” and he began to vocalize that he questioned every aspect of his life and even his desire to continue being married.
To me, this realization was devastating. I knew he was having some challenges but I never questioned whether or not we should be together. We had never even had a fight, but looking back I can see now that we each had developed some unhealthy ways of dealing with (or ignoring) the differences of opinions we had due to the dysfunctional experiences of our childhoods.
My whole life changed in an instant. That year was filled with much stress, anxiety, and deep sadness, as well as a great revelation of God’s great love for each of us.
I knew that God didn’t cause this pain, but that He wouldn’t waste it. What the enemy meant to steal, kill, and destroy, God would use to reveal, shore up, and cause new abundant life to course through! Everything I had learned about faith was for this battle and I knew that I couldn’t remain in faith with an unrenewed mind. That whatever I allowed my mind to feed on was what would dominate me. I was going to have to constantly be in the Word in order to keep my mind renewed with God’s thoughts and daily remind the enemy he had no jurisdiction in my marriage! The enemy will always accuse your spouse, just determine not to join that team. When he speaks against your spouse, he is speaking against you because together you are one.
Getting back to my study of EZER, the original Hebrew gives the context that it has a military connotation. As in “likened unto a military aide, one who HELPS a WARRIOR to OVERCOME in BATTLE.”
Friends, this BLEW MY MIND! Want to know why? Because my Beloved’s name is CHAD, which means BATTLE WARRIOR! And I am his EZER!! Which means God called ME to HELP HIM in his DESTINY!
Yes, our family has been through a battle, but I can now see how God sent ME to be a help to my husband even more than I ever before realized! Isn’t He SO GOOD? God lives outside of linear time and sees the beginning from the end and KNEW my husband would need ME at this exact time in his life!
If you are facing some challenges in YOUR marriage today, I’d love to come alongside YOU and shore YOU up for the battle you may be enduring! God still has a great plan for you and your spouse! I love using my skills as a coach to be a safe place for you to share what’s on your heart and then shore you up with the Word of Truth that you can stand firm on while the Lord fights your battle for you!
