Why “Suffering with Sickness” is Unscriptural

The Bible speaks clearly about the suffering that we, as Christians, will have to endure as good soldiers. Things like suffering persecution for our beliefs and suffering for the sake of preaching the Gospel in places where it is against the laws of that land.

The Apostle Paul suffered many things at the hands of those who opposed him; stonings, angry mobs, hunger, thirst, nakedness, imprisonments, and shipwrecks.

Not many of us will have the same level of calling as Paul and thus will probably not suffer to the degree he did, but in all of his sufferings, you can be assured that sickness was NOT among them.

Many reference Paul’s “thorn in the flesh” which he said himself was a “messenger of Satan.” It is a term which is equivalent to our phrase “a pain in the neck” to describe someone or something irksome. It was not a physical ailment but rather someone who was sent by Satan to constantly harass him to try to get him off course. But God told him that His grace was sufficient for him. That in those moments when he felt powerless and weak, those are the moments when Christ’s power IN HIM would strengthen him the most and thus he could then boast in his weakness because God would get all the credit for the victory!

For ALL sicknesses of the body and mind, were conquered at the cross when Jesus “Himself took our infirmities and carried away our diseases” (Matt. 8:17).

Isaiah 53:4-12 describes ALL that Jesus was going to endure; that ALL disease and mental torment would be laid upon Him when He would pay the price for sin which allowed death and everything that comes with it (sickness included) to enter the lives of every person on earth.

It even says it pleased the Lord to ALLOW IT to be laid on Jesus because, with that act, Jesus redeemed us from the curse of the Law and all it included. (Gal. 3:13, Deut. 28).

So, if God ALREADY ALLOWED it to be placed on Jesus, He does NOT allow it to be on you. The devil is so subtle and usually uses just a grain of truth when he’s spewing lies.

Will we suffer with Christ? Yes.

Do we need to suffer with sickness? Emphatically, NO!

If we think we are supposed to suffer then why would we try to get well?

And if we think God “wills” something horrible to happen to our body, then we’ve forgotten that Jesus was God’s exact representation when He walked the earth and that He healed ALL who came to Him seeking healing.

Jesus got us back the authority that Adam lost in the garden, but Satan is still allowed jurisdiction in the earth until Jesus returns. In the meantime, Jesus gave us all authority and He overcame death, hell, and the grave for us. We must now stand like a good soldier and learn how to wield our weapons of faith.

For we are NOT the sick trying to GET HEALED, for if we are IN CHRIST, we are now the HEALED and the enemy tries to take our health from us with the symptoms of this fallen world. But we don’t have to accept it.

I challenge you to meditate on these verses, because “faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word of Christ” (Romans 10:17.)  Seek to learn all that Jesus made yours, regardless of what anyone you know or love is “suffering patiently” with.

Don’t be tempted to compare yourself to anyone else, especially someone who may not have received their healing here on earth. We don’t ever know what someone else’s journey fully entails and why they went home early or sickly.

We must also remember that Jesus Himself said, “The thief (Satan) comes to STEAL, KILL, and DESTROY, but I have come that you may have LIFE and LIFE ABUNDANTLY!” If there’s any stealing, killing, and destruction going on, give credit where it’s due and STOP ACCUSING God of hurting His own children.

We can never base OUR FAITH on someone’s experience, but we base our faith on THE WORD OF GOD. And Psalm 91:16 says, “with LONG life will I satisfy them and let them behold my SALVATION.” That word in Hebrew is “Yeshuah” (3444 Strongs) which literally translates to “something saved, deliverance, aid, victory, prosperity, HEALTH, SAVING HEALTH, welfare.” This is ALL God purposed in our SALVATION! Yes, we get to go to heaven, but these other things are to benefit us HERE ON EARTH!

It’s not for when we get to heaven to enjoy wholeness, we’ll have no need of it then.

It’s for HERE and NOW while we run our race to enjoy ALL the victory Jesus paid to make ours!

Be Blessed, Jenny xoxo
