It’s so easy to think that because we are older than our children that we are better, wiser, or we know more of what they should be doing than they do.
But is it true?
Becoming an adult and accomplishing “adult” things is not always easy.
Even now, as mid-life adults, we can hopefully admit that WE don’t always have it all figured out or do everything right all the time.
We should be learning and growing throughout our entire lives.
We need to simply give our adult children the space AND trust to do it!
To allow God to write THEIR STORIES with Him and be impacted by His love on THEIR journey.
Maybe your child seems to have left the faith or is questioning their beliefs now as an adult and that worries you, so you pester them about it, which only makes them want to avoid you.
Where can you look at YOUR OWN FAITH and see where YOU need to cultivate FAITH and TRUST in both THEM and GOD that they will figure things out together?
Maybe they are living a lifestyle that is contrary to what you taught them when they were growing up.
If you taught them, then they know what you believe, right?
You must RESIST FEAR, which tempts you to try to control and manipulate them, which even though it comes from your heart, it is still a heart operating in FEAR.
We know that God operates from LOVE and the devil is the one who operates from FEAR, so choose wisely whose team you want to be on.
You say, “Well, I’m just concerned.” “I think they should do x,y,z.” “When are they going to grow up?” These are all code for FEAR, FEAR, and FEAR.
It’s much more important to keep the lines of communication OPEN so they can come to you for support and advice WHEN THEY ASK FOR IT.
WE must make the SHIFT into being the “captain in their boat” to a LIGHTHOUSE.
What exactly does that look like?
Being the LIGHT and UNCONDITIONAL LOVE of Jesus ALWAYS.
Being a steadfast presence on the shoreline of their life.
Someone they can TRUST to “come home” to.
Always there, encouraging, lifting up with FAITH-FILLED WORDS about all you see in them and their future, and to become an INTERCESSORY PRAYER WARRIOR who takes ALL HER CONCERNS to the ONE WHO actually has the POWER to EFFECT CHANGE!
RESIST the temptation to SPEAK NEGATIVELY TO or ABOUT THEM!
INSTEAD GET IN YOUR WORD and find what God SAYS about them and SPEAK THAT!
Because LIFE and DEATH are in the POWER of the TONGUE.
If you want to see different things than you must speak differently.
Our children deserve emotionally regulated parents whom they can walk through the trials and victories of life with.
Our adult children NO LONGER NEED US but we want them to WANT US in their lives, right?
This is the sweet spot of motherhood where you’ve done all the teaching and training and you simply GET TO DELIGHT in WHO THEY ALREADY ARE, not in who you THINK THEY SHOULD BE.
