Can you know when you are young what God is calling you to do? Can God give you a glimpse of your future that will keep you steady when times are tough? Absolutely! Don’t believe the lie of the enemy that sells the idea that young adults today are not truly grown up till they are thirty and must extend their childhood because they are not sure what to do.
Find yourself in the Word, just like Jesus did. (Luke 4:16-21) Jesus studied the scriptures from a young age and found Himself mentioned in there many, many times. He knew that Isaiah 61 was talking about His mission. Do we have the same mission that Jesus did? No, of course not. But God is no respecter of persons and can give you an understanding of who you are when you learn all He’s called you to according to the Word. You are chosen. You are deeply loved. You are destined. You are called to the ministry of reconciliation. (2 Cor. 5:18) We all are. What in the world is that? Will God make me go to a foreign country, eat bugs, and share the Gospel? Nope, but you can if you want to 😉 You are called to serve God and others with whatever gifts you have been given. Living a life with serving in mind makes everything you do, big or small, so fulfilling because you are doing it for Him. (Col. 3:17)
Ask God. He is the Author of the plan after all. (James 1:5) God will usually talk to you about what you talk to Him about. If you want to know something specific, get specific in your asking. Sometimes when I didn’t want to know something, I just avoided talking to Him about it. But He’s always right there whenever you are ready to talk. He’s a good Dad like that.
Pray in the Spirit and with your understanding. (1 Cor. 14:15) Paul was a pretty smart guy and taught us that it only benefits us to pray in English (or whatever your known language is) but to also pray in other tongues. When we are praying in other tongues we are praying perfect prayers from the Holy Spirit straight to God Himself. Sometimes we pray all we know how to pray and still don’t feel we’ve satisfied the need. Praying in the Spirit can help you to “pray through” some situations. Because the Holy Spirit has inside information. It’s as if in the spirit you are laying down the rails for the train of your life to head down in the future. When you come to a fork in the road you’ll have a knowing on the inside because you’ve already been there in the spirit. And Jude 20 says that when we take time to pray in other tongues it will build up our faith.
Thank Him that He is leading you! (Romans 8:14) As sons and daughters of God we GET to be led by the Spirit! We don’t have to do life alone. God has put His Spirit on the inside of us! We might not know every detail, but we can thank Him daily that He promised to lead us. Jesus said in John 16:13 that it was to our advantage that He was going to the Father because He would send the Spirit to dwell IN us and that He would lead and guide us into all truth and disclose to us what is to come!
Even knowing just a small glimpse of what God has called you to do can help you to decide some huge life decisions. Such as: what should I pursue as a career or study, who should I marry, where should I live, who should I hang out with? Even if you don’t know all the details, which you won’t because a big part of faith is trusting God and moving forward with only the next step revealed, you can always ask yourself, “Will making this choice, spending time with ___________, or taking that job draw me closer to what I feel called to do or potentially pull me away?”
Take some time this week to “dip down” on the inside of you by reading the Word and finding what it says about you, asking God what He has in store for you today and in your future, praying with understanding and in other tongues, and then thanking Him that He promised to lead you and that He is leading you right now! ~Be Blessed, Jenny
