Pour over GOOD BOOKS, listen to encouraging Podcasts, binge homeschooling blogs (like mine 😉 ) peruse Pinterest for ideas for crafts, games, or activities that will easily flow with your lesson plans.
At the end of every summer I would spend a few days holed up in a cozy corner or out on my hammock pouring over things that INSPIRED ME for the year ahead.
I was recalibrating my heart and mind for the ADVENTURE AHEAD of ALL OF US.
Yes, ALL OF US, because I understood that my children’s childhood was also MY MOTHERHOOD and I GOT TO MAKE IT MAGICAL for ME, TOO!
One thing I definitely knew to be true when homeschooling my children was that if I was EXCITED about LEARNING, they would FEED OFF OF MY EXCITEMENT!
MY ATTITUDE set the thermostat of our LEARNING ATMOSPHERE, whether at home, at the zoo, at the art museum, or just lying on a picnic blanket with our sketch pads watching with wonder the world around us.
YES, I had my own sketch pad and watercolors and drawing pencils.
I got the opportunity to learn right alongside my children and not always act like I knew it all already.
The gift of being able to unlock the WONDER that is in each of us for CREATION.
Not that everyday was going to be a Norman Rockwell picture day, but that there was JOY to be found in every day.
Even if it was just to snuggle up on the sofa with piles of books and blankets and pillows and mugs of hot liquids and hearing them beg for “just one more chapter, Mama!”
Being so grounded on the inside that this is truly what it’s all about.
Not just the memorization of facts and sums.
But the blessing of coziness, deep and meaningful conversations, and the shared stewardship of all our gifts.
So, as you ease into another NEW SCHOOL YEAR, dear Mama, rest and enjoy.
They will never be this small again.
Soak up every last drop of them.
