Why Homeschooling is a Journey of Learning for the Mother as Much as For the Child

Over the years I have had a few mamas ask me if I would be interested in homeschooling their child.

While that may sound tempting, what it would really be is hiring a private tutor, which some parents choose to do.

But knowing that would change the experience for my own children, it would also rob the other family of the deeper work that homeschooling affords.

I’ve heard many say, “Oh, I’m not patient enough.” “I wish I could homeschool but I’d never be disciplined enough.” “I don’t feel qualified.” “I could never be with my children all day, every day.”

Some mamas have even told me, “I could homeschool one of my children, but not another because they are too difficult.”

But that’s the whole point.

During seasons of life, we may try to convince ourselves that certain children are more “challenging” than others but the fact is that THEY are just the ones who challenge US to do some REAL WORK WITHIN OURSELVES.

The child who has a personality that gels with you and doesn’t push your buttons does not require you to do much work on your own heart, right?

If you have the desire in your heart to go on the journey of homeschooling, YOU will learn just as much as your child!

Homeschooling, like motherhood, is a journey of faith.

You may not have the entire 13-year blueprint all mapped out but you are committing to be sensitive to the Lord’s leading, each day and each year, and you’re willing to do the work on YOURSELF to press into the highest version God designed for you, which we must for anything we are called to. ❤

I was so blessed to homeschool our children from K-12.

We wanted our children to have a slower-paced family life and an education that was tailored to their needs and interests with plenty of time just to be and enjoy discovering the world around them.

It was a lifestyle that allowed us so much more family time, which I will never regret one bit.

We learned and grew up together and it was a journey of faith, for they taught me some of the most valuable things about myself, my strengths and weaknesses alike, and I have received back so much more than I ever anticipated.

It allowed us the most precious gift of time. Time to allow them each to learn the leading of God, to practice His presence, and to get glimpses of His wonderful callings and giftings within them.
