
Getting real with you all today.
My mind was blown when I read this quote from Brené Brown:
“Perfectionism is a self-destructive and addictive belief system that fuels this primary thought: If I look perfect, and do everything perfectly, I can avoid or minimize the painful feelings of shame, judgment, and blame.“
It so resonated on the inside of me and a lightbulb went off as I leaned in and asked myself three very important questions.
“Have I been trying to do everything ‘perfectly’ in order to avoid feeling the emotions of embarrassment (an emotion I loathe, ouch) judgment, or shame and disappointment when I mess up?”
“Have I tried my best to show up ‘perfectly’ in order to feel the positive emotions of validation, praise, and even the admiration of others?”
AND…
“Have I sometimes not even put myself out there to avoid even the threat of not being accepted, being misconstrued, or misunderstood?”
The FREEDOM mindset here is that all of this is COMPLETELY NORMAL! Our brains are wired to PROTECT us.
Back in the days when humans lived in tents and other structures that were not as secure from invaders or wild animals that prowled about, this was totally understandable.
We don’t have those concerns as much now, but our brains still shift into the “protection mode” when they sense a threat to our well-being, even if it is only emotional.
So, as women, we try to keep the “perfect home” because we think our husbands, or mother-in-law, or others will judge us if we don’t.
We try to show our “perfect children” by posting our photo sesh on socials to be admired or in person when they never disobey or have a tantrum in public because we think that means that we are good mamas.
The list could go on and on, but I want you to know that you can hop off the false PERFECTION TRAIN whenever you are ready!
Because the truth is, “trying to be perfect” is MORE EXHAUSTING and CONSUMING than just learning to ALLOW ALL OF YOUR EMOTIONS.
